When we returned from our Easter holidays the children discovered that a blackbird had built a nest and laid eggs on the window ledge of Miss Moore’s garden.
The children, in small groups, were able to observe through the window and eventually the eggs hatched to reveal five beautiful chicks. The children have been so excited but very quiet and careful not to frighten the chicks or their mother. The children have watched as the mother blackbird fly’s off and leaves her chicks to find food for them. She always returns to them, to feed them and keep them warm.
We have been so lucky to get so close to this wonderful act of nature and the children have been so enthralled by it they have brought their ideas into the classroom, where they have been writing reports and painting pictures about the whole process. They have created a wonderful blackbird display outside their classroom.
