Welcome to Year 1 Learning Page 2015 – 2016
Maths Mission Area
The children have enjoyed exploring our maths mission area using cubes down the adding tunnels to help us find the answer to different number sentences.
They have also recorded the number sentence and answers onto whiteboards.
Hot seating in Literacy
Within Literacy we have looked closely at the book ‘Class two at the zoo’. The children thoroughly enjoyed joining in with the rhyming phrases within the book. They had lots to share about their own experiences about going to a zoo but luckily no anaconda tried to eat them!
We decided to do a hot-seating activity where the children took on the role of a character within the story. We chose the anaconda. The other children asked the character lots of different questions. We had lots of fun doing this.
Our R.E topic is families. We have been looking at the love and care shown in a family. We have been talking about how we know our family loves us and that God loves all of us too. We have been learning a song and looking at different psalms which tell us about God’s love and care for everyone.
Image of families display and God takes care of everyone.
Our topic this term is Pets! The children have loved bringing in photographs of their own pets and sharing them with the rest of the class. We have been looking closely at how to care for pets and the children have enjoyed painting pictures of their own pets or pictures of their favourite pet. Look at our fabulous display – watch out Picasso!
In Science we have been learning all about our senses. The children were very good at sorting the picture cards to the correct sense. We have also carried out an investigation linked to the five senses. Each task required us to use a different sense. We tasted different flavours of jelly, smelled different things and even looked at optical illusions to test our eye sight. We also had a game of Chinese whispers and used our hands to guess what was in the feely bag. The children really enjoyed this activity!
In literacy we have been doing some work around the book ‘Goldilocks and the three bears’. The children have been amazing at role-playing the story and taking on the role of the characters very seriously. The expression they have been using for the different characters has been fantastic. We are very proud of them. The children have also been creating wanted posters for Goldilocks and writing letters of apology to the three bears.
Role play area
The pet shop role play area has now been developed into a Vets. The children are enjoying this very much. They are enjoying taking on the role of receptionists, owners bringing in their poorly pets and taking on the role as the main vet in the surgery. The children have been making appointments, which are recorded in the appointment book and children are given an appointment card to remind them about their appointment. When they have an appointment, they have been waiting very patiently in the waiting area. Our vets sometimes gets very busy with lots of poorly animals!
Following the children’s interests of ‘Jurassic world’ the construction area has been developed. The children have been great at making dinosaurs using their Lego. They have also been designing their models before making them and writing labels for their models.
Learning all about Syllables!
Syllable fun using duplo and spots on the carpet!
Positional Language Experts!
To learn all about positional language we went outdoors and took part in lots of different activities. It was very important we used our listening ears to listen carefully to the instructions given. We impressed Miss Bingley and Mrs Martin with how many positional words we could think of and describe!!
Every Wednesday morning we are very lucky to have Mrs Hill come in to do some Music with us. We have been learning some lovely songs and we have been impressing her with our fantastic singing voices (Watch out X-FACTOR). We have also been adding actions to the songs. We have been trying very hard to keep to the beat and have been playing percussion instruments at different volumes.
Flip the pancake!
The children have been trying very hard to read numbers in words. They have been flipping pancakes, reading the word and then building a tower using the correct number of cubes depending on the word! We have been having lots of fun and have been trying very hard to read the words (as some of them are very tricky to recognise).
WORLD BOOK DAY IN YEAR 1
We had lots of fun in Year 1 celebrating World Book Day. The children looked fantastic and had put lots of effort into their costumes! We shared the story of ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ and the children enjoyed creating a shiny crown for the giant!
Check out our Boggle Display! The children have lots of fun building up words independently and seeing how many points they can get in total!
We celebrate our work! We are all incredible in Year 1.
Man on the moon
In literacy we have been reading ‘Man on the Moon’ and doing work based around this book. Miss Bingley dressed up as Bob and our challenge was to write as many questions as we could for Bob! We are very good at remembering our question mark at the end of our questions.
Fun in the garden centre.
